ILS Critical Area Fence delivered at Blaise Diagne International Airport, Senegal

AviNeering has delivered a complete ILS Critical Area Fence solution to Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS), Senegal’s main international gateway located near Dakar. The delivery was part of a initiative to improve the safety and reliability of the airport’s Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), especially during precision approach operations under low visiblity operations.

The ILS Critical Area Fence is a non-metallic barrier designed to physically protect the Localizer and Glide Path critical zones from signal interference. The presence of metallic vehicles or equipment in these zones, even in short perioeds, can cause reflections or multipath effects that degrade the ILS signal and compromise flight safety during landings.

To address this risk, ICAO outlines strict recommendations for protecting these areas, including the use of physical barriers where procedural controls are not sufficient. AviNeering’s solution is fully compliant with ICAO Annex 10, Volume I and the European Guidance Material on the Management of ILS Critical and Sensitive Areas (EUR Doc 040).

Project Scope and Deliverables:

The project scope included:

• Design of a site-specific Critical Area Fence, based on ILS geometry and obstacle-free area limitations

• Delivery of non-metallic materials, including WPC posts and UV-stabilized red/white polyester rope

• Frangibility-compliant structural design, verified via simulation testing on aircraft impact

• Documentation and compliance support based on ICAO/EUROCONTROL standards
  

The installed ILS Critical Area Fence now provides a permanent, low-maintenance solution for maintaining ILS signal integrity by preventing unintentional incursions into the protected zones.
